Tell me about Renaissance Fair?
Q. Hey, I'm going to Ren Faire for my first time this summer. But I really don't know anything about it. I know a lot of people dress up, make booths, perform, sell crafts, etc. However-- how does that stuff relate to renaissance times? What kind of things people did during the renaissance are mirrored at the Ren Fair? Were these things commonplace? What sorts of things did people do in Renaissance times? I'm a bit clueless at the moment-- hopefully not entirely clueless for too much longer.

A. OK, I don't know where you live, but I'm a regular at my local Faire (yes, that's the way it's spelled). My Faire (The Pennsylvania) is based on a historical tidbit; Queen Elizabeth I hated the heat of London in the summer, and so, visited as many country villages as she could. The locals would, of course, do their best to keep Her Majesty entertained. My Faire attempts to recreate a typical festival day held in honor of the queen's visit. The Faire employs several hundred actors--some professional, most not, to portray everyone from royalty to rat-catcher. All are obliged to stay in character for the duration of the Faire day. Also on hand are musicians, acrobats, magicians, jesters, and specialty acts you won't see anywhere else. … [cont.]
