Is a Harp or Violin better for a beginner?
Q. I'm very interested in learning to play an instrument but I'm having some trouble deciding between a Harp and a Violin. Which would be a better instrument for a novice with very little musical knowlege?

How should I tune a 15 string harp?
Q. I just bought a 15 string lap harp and I was wondering how should I tune it? I thought about tuning it every semi and whole note starting at C up to the D an octave above the first C so I can play in any key, but I end up getting a very limited range. As well, if you can, please recommend any websites that have free sheet music, thanks.

A. I don't play harp but I know some people who do. You tune it to a C major diatonic scale -- the red strings are C's and the blue strings are F's. Better quality/more advanced models have sharping levers on the C and F strings to facilitate retuning to play in different keys (want to play in G? Flip the sharping levers on all the F strings to make them into F#'s -- no problem). Top quality harps have sharping levers on every string to make the instrument fully chromatic. If your instrument doesn't have sharping levers, then to play in different keys, you'll have to manually retune to get the necessary sharps or flats you'll need for the key you want. Hope this helps.

How would I go about learning to play the harp?
Q. I've always wanted to learn how. If I could master just one musical instrument, it would be the harp. How much would a harp cost? How about the lessons? Could I possibly teach myself? Any info would help. Thanks.

A. I'm a harper; I've been teaching myself for sixteen years now. You may e-mail me if you like, and I can give you more specific information. Where do you live? What variety of harp would you like to play--pedal or lever? I can direct you better if I have an idea what you have in mind. I play Irish harp, and so most of the music I play is Irish, Scottish or Welsh. My harp is made by a company called Dusty Strings, based in Seattle, Washington, USA; I bought it at Melody's Traditional Music in Houston, Texas. Mine has 32 strings; if you were to buy it new today, it would be about $3,900.00. Dusty Strings is the best maker of lever, or folk, harps in the US, in my opinion. If you're interested in pedal harp, a cheap one will be about $10,000,… [cont.]

Help me find a picture where a harp is being played by a foot?
Q. I used to have this picture a few years back, but due to several reformats, it's been lost in transit. It's a picture--very artistic--of a harp and a foot, and if I recall correctly, each toe is on a separate string. I'd be gracious if anyone could help me find this picture--I've looked everywhere. Thanks in advance!

Can anyone tell me anything about harp strings?
Q. It's for research purposes for a who-dun-it. Piano wire seems a bit cliched, but I know nothing about re-stringing harps. BTW - I (when working as crew in venues ) was always amazed by harp and double-bass players' resilinence in lugging unwieldy intruments around. Pianists have it easy. i am really looking for harp strings as a plausible (FICTIONAL) murder weapon.

A. Well here is a thought... As a harpist, the scariest thing for me is when a string in the upper register (which can be either nylon or gut) pops near my face. I always feel like I am going to lose an eye! Also, at night time (BTW my harp is close to my bed) when one of the metal strings in the contra/ great octave breaks it sounds like a gun shot! Which is not fun to wake up to! (It's also makes a rather creepy noise right before a string pops, because you can hear it unwinding/ stretching.) Another idea you can use for your book is that a harp technician could "accidentally" string the harp to the highest tension-in aims for the soundboard to explode and/or al l the strings to pop simultaneously. If those don't work for you, someone… [cont.]

A. Writing for the concert harp isn't easy and definitely not for the faint of heart. Unless you're intimately aware of the capabilities of the concert harp, it might be better to rethink your orchestration. ... Or find a harpist and work with her on the transcription, or a good chunk of what you're writing might not be playable.

A. Geeza is on the right track. However, the probability that none of them knows is not (12/19)^6. It is 12/19 * 11/18 *10/17 * 9/16 * 8/15 * 7/14 = 0.03405572755417956656346 7492260062 Likewise, probability that exactly one knows is probability that only first one knows + probability that only 2nd one knows ... etc = 6 * 7/19 * [11/18 *10/17 * 9/16 * 8/15 * 7/14] = 0.11919504643962848297213 622291022 so 1 - 0.034 - 0.119 = 0.847 I hope I didn't make any silly mistakes.

How is tension distributed over the harp?
Q. Are there any trends regarding frequency, wavelength, wave velocity, or tension across the harp?
Asked by FalennixonX - Thu Apr 27 22:18:37 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am uncertain, but I believe that the strings on a harp would have to oscillate via a certain mode corresponding to A*sin(n*pi) where n determines the mode of oscillation. I would have to spend a lot more time though to determine the tension distribution on an actual harp though.
