Experience as a general concept comprises knowledge of or skill in or observation of some thing or some event gained through involvement in or exposure to that thing or event. The history of the word experience aligns it closely with the concept of experiment.

The concept of experience generally refers to know-how or procedural knowledge, rather than propositional knowledge: on-the-job training rather than book-learning. Philosophers dub knowledge based on experience "empirical knowledge" or "a posteriori knowledge".

The interrogation of experience has a long tradition in continental philosophy. Experience plays an important role in the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard. The German term Erfahrung, often translated into English as "experience", has a slightly different implication, connoting the coherency of life's experiences.

A person with considerable experience in a certain field can gain a reputation as an expert.

Certain religious traditions (such as types of Buddhism, Surat Shabd Yoga and mysticism) and educational paradigms with, for example, the conditioning of boot camps, stress the experiential nature of human epistemology. This stands in contrast to alternatives: traditions of dogma, logic or reasoning. Participants in activities such as tourism, extreme sports and recreational drug-use also tend to stress the importance of experience.

What are your experiences with the military wives community?
Q. My friend and I are prior Army and live on base because our husbands are still soldiers. I am not trashing the whole community, but between the two of us we seriously only meet a "normal" Army wife once in a blue moon. The rest of them surrounding both areas where we live respectfully do nothing but gossip and try to mind everyone's business but their own, and are actually very snide. We are on Riley. Is this base just terrible for that kind of thing? What experiences have others had? What experiences have people had with other branches?

A. I try to avoid other wives. I was active duty Army and currently in the reserves. If we go to parties or company get togethers I end up hanging around the guys anyways. I just feel out of touch with civilian wives. Edit: Good job@ygg that had me rolling.

What experiences could make a person feel he had conrol over the chances of reinforcement coming into his life?
Q. Some people seem to feel they have little control over the reinforcement that comes into their lives. What kinds of experiences do you think could change this view, make a person feel he had more control over the chances of reinforcement coming into his life?

A. People that feel they have little control over reinforcements (rewards) are likely to attribute good things that happen to them to chance (something external, environmental) rather than to thier good efforts (something internal, personal). As a result, they are more likely to explain positive occurances in thier life as chance happenings and less likely to recognize thier own role in contributing to the positive outcome. People can gain insight into thier own role in successes by shifting thier perspective and experiencing new things. Examples of reinforcements (rewards) that occur in everyday life are getting good grades by studying, making a good meal then sitting down to enjoy it, dieting then losing weight, practicing a skill (i.e.… [cont.]

What are your experiences with having a second child?
Q. I am expecting my second child early next summer, and have a 2 year old (she will be 3 at the end of next summer). She seems to LOVE being around her one month old baby cousin, but I'm still worried about how things will work? What are some experiences you have had, and can I do anything to make the transition easier?

A. My daughter was 2 when her brother was born. In preparation we bought her a doll and stroller and she took care of the doll. I took her to all me appointments so she could understand what was happening especially the ultrasounds. We also shopped for a gift from her to her brother and I bought something small from her brother to her that I knew she would love. I also had her help me such as get diapers, wipes etc. I also didn't deny her holding her brother, we explained that he's delicate and that she needed an adult to help her with the pillow (they love holding their sibling). Also we spoke about all the things she could teach him and what a great role a big sister is. As my son was a great sleeper my husband and I spend as much time… [cont.]
