How to lighten dark hair naturally at home?
Q. I have naturally dark hair. I am growing out my highlights & going back to my natural color, but want to lighten it a bit. I used to use lemon juice and layout, but not much sun these days. Does the lemon really work to lighten hair? As I recall, it would add red highlights to my dark brown hair. If I put a heat cap on will it activate the lemon properties? Any other natural easy lightening tricks that won't damage my hair?

A. Lemon juice will work just as well with the heat from a blow dryer as it does from laying out. You can also do the same trick with a bottle of fresh hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore. There also used to be a product called "Sun In" that would give highlights to your hair by spraying it on and either laying out or using a blow dryer. I'm not sure if that stuff is around any more though. Any of these will give you very subtle, minor lightening. Highlights that look natural are achieved easier if you comb these things through rather than spray them on. Also, any lightening you do will cause some damage, so be prepared and get a good conditioner.

What hair products to use to keep my dark hair from fading?
Q. I get my hair dyed (professionally) a few shades darker than my natural color. Its dark brown with a purple tint, and then after 2 or 3 weeks it almost red looking because it has faded so much. I use paul mitchell strength shampoo and i love it but is there another product i can use with that to prevent fading?
Asked by Sam C - Mon Jul 13 11:00:34 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Whenever you have your hair dyed, you should use a shampoo for color treated hair. Not sure if Paul Mitchell has one, but they should, but other salon brands like Matrix (Biolage, Amplify, etc) do. Also, washing your hair less should help, as well as staying out of the sun. If you have to go in the sun, use a leave in conditioner that has a SPF in it.

How do I naturally lighten my DARK hair?
Q. I want to highlight my hair. NOT lighten all my hair, just give it a few highlights. But I have pretty dark hair and I've heard that that lemon thing doesn't work for people with dark hair. And I've also heard from A LOT of people that the highlights will be a red-ish orange-ish color. I want a method that is proven and is almost sure to work with dark hair. Thanks! -Maysun And I don't want to buy a kit from the store. I want a home remedy.

What is the best hair removal technique for dark hair and light skin?
Q. I have really dark hair - almost jet black, but I have very light skin. (Look at my avatar) Whenever I shave my legs, you can sometimes still see the black hair bud underneath my skin. So I am so self-conscious about my legs and I feel so uncomfortable wearing shorts or skirts! Does anyone else have this problem? What is the best way to make my legs look absolutely hairless? Preferably a technique I could do by myself at home...

A. The best suggestion I could give you in which will make your tiny black hair roots disappear is using wax strips. Its so simple to do, there is no heating up or any mess, since its a strip with some wax on it and all you do is put it on and strip away, it doesnt even hurt and there is no sticky wax stuck to your skin. wax strips can be found in any beauty salon/shop best of all, there is no hair or even black hair roots for 6 weeks:)

How long does it take to get hair from a dark red to blonde again?
Q. I dyed my normally golden blonde hair to a dark red this summer and I love it and have kept it up for about a month now. I've heard you have to gradually lighten darker hair to get it blonde. I'm only thinking of this because I'm planning an RTW trip to start next April and I don't want to worry about dying my hair while traveling or have to see odd roots.
Asked by svs_g - Wed Aug 1 17:28:08 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It depends on your hair type, how often you dye it, and what color dye you use. If you start now, it should Definitely be blonde by next April. If not, you could have it done at a salon just before your trip.

What color should I dye my dark hair?
Q. I have naturally dark brown hair (nearly black) and bleached hair on only the front section of my hair. The bleached area is really fried to my dissapointment and I was thinking of a change of color for my whole hair. I was thinking of some others but it requires bleaching again. If anyone knows some great looking colors that doesn't require me to do anything too damaging that would be great. I was thinking something that is noticeable to others and quite a change but nothing extreme like blue hair. Once again it's for my whole hair and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

What is a good non permanent hair dye for dark brown hair?
Q. My hair is dark brown, some people say it is black. My parents won't let me die my hair though unless it is non permanent. I want to do something different for my prom which is in about a week. I want to dye my hair some bronze/ redish color. Most of the stuff I found though is permanent. Does anybody know something that will come off in about 10-15 washes? And something that will definitely show in my dark hair?

What hair color is the most abundant among native Germans? Blonde hair or dark hair?
Q. Do the majority of Germans have dark hair or blonde hair? If you've spent time in Germany, what hair color do you see the most of there among native Germans? Germans are often stereotyped as having blonde hair but does this stereotype actually hold a lot of truth or not?

A. I'm German, and I'm dark-haired, curled, slowly graying (as older men do), brown-eyed, well, someway like my avatar. Germany, as so many people in central Europe, has been overrun so often by foreign tribes (who wouldn't remember the Roman Empire?), that no one can ever tell where his genes are from: Was it a Roman soldier, or a slave from Greece? -- But who the heck cares? My ancestors are Romano-Slavian and South European; and then the trace gets lost somewhere in 1400 A.D. And guess what? It was fun finding that out. But it didn't change me a bit. It just cost me money.

A. I would suggest going for a heavy hi light first.Going from dark to all over blonde is very drastic. The lightening process just depends on the level of peroxide the stylist use and the timing. If your hair is very dark then it will probably not lift up to platinum, but whatever shade it does lift up to,the stylist can use a toner afterward to eliminate any orange or yellow in the hair.Best advice is to take a picture of the color blonde you are going for to show what you want.

How should you paint light on dark hair using oil paints?
Q. Im painting a portrait with oils and the hair is dark brown. Im afraid of using white but is that the way to go? Should I put in a light brown instead? Also, should I wait for the underpainting to dry before adding the highlights or do I go at it wet?

A. Under no circumstance add straight white, mix it with brown and little yellow, if you want really bright highlights that stand out mix white with little purple or warm blue. You can add the highlights in whenever you want to, you can do them wet in wet but don't muddy it. wipe your brush off after every stroke. or just wait and put the highlights in after the painting is dry to touch, whatever technique will suit your painting better. Good luck I hope it helps.

How do I lighten my dark hair naturally without having it turn copper-toned?
Q. I have dark Asian hair though mine is generally lighter than other Asians' dark hair and is more brown. Even so, we'll go with the fact that it is simply dark brown-black hair. I want to get my hair to a more brownish tone but I want it to look natural and I don't want chemicals to damage my hair. I want to lighten my hair naturally, and I've heard of the lemon and chamomile treatments people use in the sun but I've heard the lemon treatment makes hair a reddish tone. Can I lighten my hair without it going to a red/copper-tone (or just a very light one)? Please ANSWER the questions, not just dismiss them and I'd love if someone gave me an answer giving suggestions based on experience. If I can't get my hair lighter without it going… [cont.]

A. There is, but I don't advise doing your own hair lighter. If you end up with something you don't like, you will have to pay the big bucks to get it fixed. You can avoid the orange tones by buying a color with a blue/violet base however if you don't know anything about color it will be hard for you to determine which color will make your hair the color you want it to be. At home colors are impossible to define because their color charts are terrible and don't take into consideration the underlying pigments and don't tell you want base they are.

Who thinks the contrast between dark hair and fair skin is pretty?
Q. I like the contrast between dark ie dark brown/black hair and fair skin... I think a bit of pink blush, mascara and soft pink lip gloss can create a nice and pretty look. There is a girl at work and she has these features and I've always thought she looks kinda dark and mysterious with her dark hair and fairer features. Do you agree that these colourings stand out and look interesting compared to a bleach blonde and fake tan look? I'm just curious as to what other people think! Thanks :)

A. you know I would agree with you. Dark hair and pale skin, it can be absolutely stunning. The pale skin allows the colors of the eyes and hair to stand out.
