How to lighten dark hair naturally at home?
Q. I have naturally dark hair. I am growing out my highlights & going back to my natural color, but want to lighten it a bit. I used to use lemon juice and layout, but not much sun these days. Does the lemon really work to lighten hair? As I recall, it would add red highlights to my dark brown hair. If I put a heat cap on will it activate the lemon properties? Any other natural easy lightening tricks that won't damage my hair?

A. Lemon juice will work just as well with the heat from a blow dryer as it does from laying out. You can also do the same trick with a bottle of fresh hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore. There also used to be a product called "Sun In" that would give highlights to your hair by spraying it on and either laying out or using a blow dryer. I'm not sure if that stuff is around any more though. Any of these will give you very subtle, minor lightening. Highlights that look natural are achieved easier if you comb these things through rather than spray them on. Also, any lightening you do will cause some damage, so be prepared and get a good conditioner.

What hair products to use to keep my dark hair from fading?
Q. I get my hair dyed (professionally) a few shades darker than my natural color. Its dark brown with a purple tint, and then after 2 or 3 weeks it almost red looking because it has faded so much. I use paul mitchell strength shampoo and i love it but is there another product i can use with that to prevent fading?
Asked by Sam C - Mon Jul 13 11:00:34 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Whenever you have your hair dyed, you should use a shampoo for color treated hair. Not sure if Paul Mitchell has one, but they should, but other salon brands like Matrix (Biolage, Amplify, etc) do. Also, washing your hair less should help, as well as staying out of the sun. If you have to go in the sun, use a leave in conditioner that has a SPF in it.

How can I lighten my dark hair naturally?
Q. I have curly dark brown (almost black) hair. I was thinking about something like lemon juice, but I dont want my hair to dry out and break. I live in hawaii and am in the ocean a lot so the salt water is kind of rough on my hair already..I also dont want orange hair..:) thanks!

A. try a shampoo intended for blondes, or lightening hair. Also since your in the sun that helps too!!! Try lemon juice mixed in your shampoo or conditioner, then your still getting the effects of the lemon juice, just not at its highest concentrate. Also your getting the moisture from your regular shampoo and cond. Also use a syrum like chi BEFORE you brush it. That will get rid of tangles and help keep the hair silky and healthy!! Hope it helps

How can I make my dark brown hair lighter without hair dye?
Q. I have quite dark brown, almost black hair. I think I'd suit slightly lighter hair as I have fair skin. Is there any way to lighten my hair without being harsh on it? I'd rather keep my dark hair than use something harsh to my hair. Thanks

A. Well I have dark brown-black hair. I've tried lemon juice, but it doesn't make my hair lighter, although it does add some shine. you can try tinted shampoos, Pantene Brunette Expressions lightened my hair, but not by a large amount. I have used henna in my hair, and it gave it a beautiful red tint. It didn't turn my hair red of course, but it brightened my hair and especially in the sun and direct light people noticed the color and i always got compliments on that. The only real way to get your hair lighter if its that dark brown, blackish color is bleaching it before adding color. By the way, i personally don't like the results of the Sun In product. It comes out too light, and the color isn't very natural looking. and I'm not sure… [cont.]

How long does it take to get hair from a dark red to blonde again?
Q. I dyed my normally golden blonde hair to a dark red this summer and I love it and have kept it up for about a month now. I've heard you have to gradually lighten darker hair to get it blonde. I'm only thinking of this because I'm planning an RTW trip to start next April and I don't want to worry about dying my hair while traveling or have to see odd roots.
Asked by svs_g - Wed Aug 1 17:28:08 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It depends on your hair type, how often you dye it, and what color dye you use. If you start now, it should Definitely be blonde by next April. If not, you could have it done at a salon just before your trip.

What hair color is the most abundant among native Germans? Blonde hair or dark hair?
Q. Do the majority of Germans have dark hair or blonde hair? If you've spent time in Germany, what hair color do you see the most of there among native Germans? Germans are often stereotyped as having blonde hair but does this stereotype actually hold a lot of truth or not?

A. I'm German, and I'm dark-haired, curled, slowly graying (as older men do), brown-eyed, well, someway like my avatar. Germany, as so many people in central Europe, has been overrun so often by foreign tribes (who wouldn't remember the Roman Empire?), that no one can ever tell where his genes are from: Was it a Roman soldier, or a slave from Greece? -- But who the heck cares? My ancestors are Romano-Slavian and South European; and then the trace gets lost somewhere in 1400 A.D. And guess what? It was fun finding that out. But it didn't change me a bit. It just cost me money.

What effect does henna have on dark hair?
Q. My hair is very very dark, most people assume it's black. I want to keep it dark, but with a slight reddish tint in the sunlight. How can I dye my dark brown hair lighter?
Q. Okay, I have dark brown hair and I want to dye it a lighter brown, without it turning redish! Will it even do anything since I have such dark hair?? I don't have the money to get it professionally done so I have to buy it from the store. any suggestions on how I should go about this?

A. WELL natural pigment in the hair has RED. You can't avoid the red but you can process passed it. Heres some options. If you have not colored your hair ever then you can pick a shade of lighter brown color and your hair WILL lift to the desired look. If you colored your hair years ago and havent cut it or its grown out it still will make it uneven. SO this is only if you are completely natural. Otherwise it will only get lighter where its natural and the parts thats colored will stay exactly the same!! Color does not lift color! Bleach wash or full on bleach. A "bleach wash" is shampoo, 10 volume developer, and bleach mixed together. You cover your hair from roots to ends and slowly wait till it gradually lifts. This is a slower process… [cont.]

What will happen if i dye my dark hair to light brown?
Q. At the moment I have dark brown hair but i'm trying to dye it back to my natural light brown hair color. I bought Revlon Colorsilk #54 light golden brown. Will my dark hair turn the right color I want it to?
Asked by indiefashionista - Sun May 10 21:49:00 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No. it will most likely turn a red or orange. UNLESS, your dark brown hair is your NATURAL hair color, then yes it will probably turn out the color you want. But if it is color treated already, you must first color strip your hair (bleach your current color out), then apply the hair color and it will be the EXACT color you want. Tip to remember: You cannot dye your dark hair color lighter. You just cant :)

How do I lighten my dark hair naturally without having it turn copper-toned?
Q. I have dark Asian hair though mine is generally lighter than other Asians' dark hair and is more brown. Even so, we'll go with the fact that it is simply dark brown-black hair. I want to get my hair to a more brownish tone but I want it to look natural and I don't want chemicals to damage my hair. I want to lighten my hair naturally, and I've heard of the lemon and chamomile treatments people use in the sun but I've heard the lemon treatment makes hair a reddish tone. Can I lighten my hair without it going to a red/copper-tone (or just a very light one)? A. There is, but I don't advise doing your own hair lighter. If you end up with something you don't like, you will have to pay the big bucks to get it fixed. You can avoid the orange tones by buying a color with a blue/violet base however if you don't know anything about color it will be hard for you to determine which color will make your hair the color you want it to be. At home colors are impossible to define because their color charts are terrible and don't take into consideration the underlying pigments and don't tell you want base they are.

Who thinks the contrast between dark hair and fair skin is pretty?
Q. I like the contrast between dark ie dark brown/black hair and fair skin... I think a bit of pink blush, mascara and soft pink lip gloss can create a nice and pretty look. There is a girl at work and she has these features and I've always thought she looks kinda dark and mysterious with her dark hair and fairer features. Do you agree that these colourings stand out and look interesting compared to a bleach blonde and fake tan look? I'm just curious as to what other people think! Thanks :)

How can I turn my dark hair blonde again?
Q. I used to have my hair blonde, then I dyed it dark. Not black, but really dark brown. I've tried dying it back blonde twice but there hasn't been much of a difference it all. I l know it's hard to do, I know it could turn orange and all that, but what should I use to get it blonde again, or what should I do. And please don't say go to a salon.

A. that's because dark can't be dyed out of hair, only bleach can take it out. you should get the 7th stage bleach from clairol professional, mix it with about 5 activator packets, and leave it till your hair is a light blonde/orange color. after this is done, then you need to fill it with a protein filler so your hair doesn't turn out orange or green. these can be purchased at sally beauty for about $4, and i would suggest you get a gold colored one. apply to wet hair, and wash out after 20-30 min. save a little for later to add to the dye. after your hair is dry, mix the color you chose with a 10 developer and a little bit of that protein filler, just to make the dye more potent. keep in mind if your hair turns out orangish after the bleach, [cont.]

I am bleaching the front half next week, and then putting pink dye over the bleach the same night. What exactally will this do to my hair? Turn it orange? Will the pink show? Will my hair fall out? Please help!

A. When I bleached mine, I got it done professionally because keeping it in too long could make your hair fall out so you need someone to be checking the color change & how the hair is doing constantly, you should really get that part done professionally, after you bleach it you should wait like half a day or more so that the hair doesnt get so damaged, that just helps unless you dont wanna look like an orange/ yellow head for a little while. The bleach will obviously make your hair yellowy white orangy, since you have dark in parts, so the final color, the pink, will depend on the base color which is the color that the bleach gave you, it really depends on the base what shade of pink it turns, if you buy the hair dye in the box thing make… [cont.]

What is the best professional lightening/bleach product for dark hair?
Q. Hi. I am an out of practice licensed cosmetologist. My daughter wants to highlight her hair and put purple in it. (Just one strip on the bottom). What is the best professional lightener to bleach out dark brown hair (probably a level 2). It's okay to be specific. I will be purchasing from a beauty supply store for professionals only. THANKS.

A. I have always purchased my bleaching kits from Sally Beauty supply. They seem to work best. It is called 'beyond Zone' and it comes in a kit with everything you need for about $8. Happy bleaching!

What is the BEST way to naturally lighten natural dark hair?
Q. Lemon juice, lime juice, white vinegar, peroxide, olive oil, or cinnamon? Which one work the best lightening dark brown hair but won't damage hair?

A. Lemon juice, for sure. Just put some into a spray bottle, get lots of it into your hair, and lay out in the sun. It will take a lot of time, and doesn't have the same effect as dying or highlighting your hair, but it helps. :]
