What do you look for when buying a banjo?
Q. I'd like to start playing banjo, but I have no idea what makes a good banjo. I'd like it to be inexpensive, but to have good overall value. What should I look for when buying a banjo, and what should I expect to pay for a basic one?

A. wow, what a stupid bunch of answers. if you're already a fairly accomplished guitar player, it's worth spending a few hundred bucks on a decent banjo. personally, i'd go to as many shops as possible and try every banjo i see, unplugged...then go back and try again with the ones i liked...then buy the one that really rings in my freakin heart...and...only then...plug that bad boy in!!

What is the best way to learn the rhythm to playing bluegrass banjo?
Q. I'm trying to teach myself bluegrass banjo and although I'm making good progress one problem I seem to have is understanding how to play the bluegrass rhythm. I'm using tabs so i play the notes but because the tabs don't tell you the rhythm to the song it sounds close to it but not right. How can I fix this problem? also I'm not going to spend money on a teacher because the banjo teachers in this area aren't worth the money I hear nothing but bad experiences and people quiting the instrument because of bad teachers.
Asked by Coon - Sun Nov 15 16:38:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First, I'm glad that you know about "Bad" Teachers. There are some excellent banjo teachers, but most of the time the banjo teachers that teach in back rooms at music stores are really guitar players that know little if anything about the banjo. Before trying any song in tab you first need to learn some of the banjo rolls or patterns. Practice a forward roll tmitmiti and forward -backward roll tmitimti keep each note with the same beat. A metronome can help. When you can play these smoothly and evenly than you can look at TAB in songswhere you recognize these patterns and the other basic patterns. Be sure to listen to the song over and over so that you have the melody in your head before trying to play from the tab. If you don't know… [cont.]

Would putting teflon tape over a banjo bolt stop a leak?
Q. I have a MKIII Toyota Supra and I have a leak in my power steering system. The leak is coming from a banjo bolt that mounts a power steering fluid line to the power steering pump. I tried changing the washer between the bolt and the line, but had no luck.
Asked by DJR - Fri Jul 18 22:16:25 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. NO!!! Teflon tape should not be used here. It is only designed to work on pipe thread fittings not used on natural or propane gas. You should have two (2) washers on a banjo bolt, one on either side of the hose fitting, replace both of them. Possibly you lost one when you took it apart to change the one washer.

A. I would actually like about three four string banjos. I would like to tune one to C - G - D - A like a Mandola or a Bouzuki. The second one, I would tune the same as a tenor guitar, D - G - B - E, and the third I would tune like a Ukulele. I already have a couple of five string banjos, but I keep one at school. The other one hangs up on my wall so it's ready to play anytime I am. I have a couple of Banjolins as well. They are basically flatback mandolins with a banjo head on them. Very handy to have around.

Asked by LifeMakesMeSad - Sat May 1 03:59:47 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. sure, its the banjo's serial number, usually 9 digits. check out this website to date your banjo. just as further info, a lot of older banjos have the "pot" (body) and neck of 2 separate banjos, to determine this you would have to take it to an expert. needless to say, if you have a pre-1970 banjo, you have a great and valuable instrument.

A. I just recently made the dive into playing banjo from guitar (and bass before that) and I've found that the transition is not bad. I started playing banjo 5 months ago. On the fretting side of it you'll probably feel comfortable with. There are tricks and licks you'll want to learn and make up as you go, but I found that it wasn't much different than guitar other than finger placement. Banjo is like guitar and bass mixed together. The the picking side of things, the first song I learned I played with finger picks and didn't find it too incredibly challenging. but I never used them again. I've gone down the road of clawhammer/ frailing. I would like to become very comfortable at frailing first because its a bit more challenging (to me)… [cont.]

How difficult is it to lean the mandolin or banjo?
Q. When you already know how to play the guitar, how easy (or hard) is it to learn to play the banjo or mandolin? I hear that once you know how to play one string instrument the others come a lot more easily, but I'm nervous to spend a lot of money buying another instrument if its gonna end up being really hard and I should probably just stick with perfecting the guitar.
Asked by Jen - Mon Dec 1 12:32:04 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are obviously differences between the two (three). You'll have to learn new chords for each one, but it can be done. You can pick either one up for only about $150 new. Used ones can be found even cheaper. If you're handy, you can make your own banjo and save the expense of buying one. Then you can figure out if you (personally) can learn more than one stringed instrument without sinking a bunch of money into it. I used to own a Washburn but had to sell it, so I made a couple of my own banjos. One is a mountain (Appalachian) style banjo, the other is a cookie tin banjo. That one was incredibly easy to make, and although it sounds different from a bluegrass banjo (it sounds more metallic) it's still fun to play, and sounds good.… [cont.]

A. Some people are naturals, like Brian Jones ex Band Leader of The Rolling Stones. RIP Brian. He could learn to play anything with strings on it. In a day or two. How's your strumming. You should be able to play the banjo if you picked up guitar easily.

Asked by sooper dooper - Wed Aug 8 22:16:32 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My first and best advice is to go to a music store and put your hands on a banjo. Don't buy one until you find one you can't take your hands off of. If that is not possible, the two companies I listed below will both take care of you. There are many more and I don't work for any of them, but I have done business with these two and they have both gone out of their way to make things right for me and I'm pretty fussy. Deering is a good brand, Gibson is a great brand but out of your price range. Of course if you see a Gibson in your price range, grab it. Gold Tone is a decent little banjo made in China by the Saga Corporation. I've gotten a few guitars and violins from them and their work is pretty even. IF you get a banjo on line you… [cont.]

What kind of banjo should I buy?
Q. I'm looking to buy my first banjo. I play upright bass, guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele, so I don't think I need a "beginners banjo". I'm planning on playing more folk than bluegrass. What's the difference between open back and resonator? My banjo hero is Sufjan Stevens, so it would be great if anyone knows what kind of banjo he has.
Asked by Emily - Sat Sep 27 09:54:23 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree - openback banjo for folk/oldtime vs bluegrass. Resonator banjos have the open back covered with a solid back piece, generally have a louder brighter sound, and they are mostly used in bluegrass with fingerpicks. Occasionally vintage resonator banjos are used in oldtime but typically with no fingerpicks. I play clawhammer style on an openback. For a real beginner banjo with a decent sound, the Deering Goodtime is a good choice except for the fact that it has recognizable odd looks-wise (light color wood body, oddly shaped headstock, and geared guitar tuners instead of banjo tuners). Gold Tone makes slightly more expensive more traditional-looking beginner's openbacks like their Cripple Creek openback version CC100. I… [cont.]

How many weeks of practice should it take before I can play "Cripple creek" on a banjo?
Q. I know there is no such thing as an over-night miracle. I have had a banjo for two weeks and I practice every day. I just wanted to know from experienced players how long it took them from total beginner to playing all the way through Cripple creek.
Asked by Fork - Mon May 10 00:31:42 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, when i first started, it was one of the first songs I learned. It probably took me about 2-3 weeks before I could play it from memory, and it could be classified as recognizable. It took me a few more weeks to really get the hang of it, and only have a few mistakes. The banjo can be slow going in the beginning, but it's completely worth it. Give yourself a month or two and you'll be amazed at your progress. Good luck to ya! If you haven't already, check out BanjoHangout.org. They have many great forums to ask questions and get advice from very kind and helpful people, as well as an extensive collection of tablature.
