How did the war itself reflect and affect American attitudes toward race? Why were the African American Union soldiers so critical in this regard? Asked by Independent - Fri Jul 24 13:44:01 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is very much a loaded question, because at the beginning of the war the Northern soldiers would never ever say that they were fighting the war to free the slaves. In many regards they were just as racist as those in the South, if more so. They were fighting to hold the Union together. It wasn't until later in the war that the polemics of politics changed, and suddenly the war was there to free the slaves. When black troops got involved, suddenly it was their fight, fighting for their own people. Ironically, again, most Union black soldiers were not on the front lines but were assigned to positions as cooks, servants, ditch diggers, etc. It was a part of the Union racism, to place them in menial jobs. Even when they fought in… [cont.] Answered by John B - Fri Jul 24 14:51:05 2009 Disney films relevant to race/racism (apart from Song of the South and The Princess and the Frog)? Q. I've decided to focus on how Disney's record on race and racism has improved for my Film Studies coursework and I need a third focus film. I've already decided on The Princess and the Frog and Song of the South. Can anyone recommend a third film, made by Disney, that has connotations of racism, deals with race-related issues or attacks/endorses racism full-on? It would be nice for the film to deal with African-Americans, as the other two do, but this is not a necessity. Thanks in advance :) Asked by DaleDaleDale - Fri Feb 12 17:21:45 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Aladdin- indians on a flying carpet? a stereotype thats been around for years. i heard that Aladdin also means something in Latin, and that it was racist. Having said that, Princess and the Frog isn't racist. If anything, it shows how much harder African Americans had to work in that era- it's a pretty accurate record. The only thing they couldn't do is bring polotics directly in the movie so African americans were displeased. Oh, you could also to Pocahontas. The movie was meant as an anti-war film. But people have interpretted it into racism- the white man comes and saves the day for the "weaker" people. I see it. But i also think people have to think everything is racist. Q. Are some Americans obsessed with race and racism? Asked by Kairos - Tue Feb 9 00:51:38 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The disintegration of community was exacerbated by the withdrawal of support services from cities because they were taken over by minorities. The zero sum myth makes people afraid that the advancement of one group means the retardation of another. Race and racism prevents assimilation and nation building. That the national mythology needs to be more inclusive meets resistance when the mythology is seen as "The Truth." The human superstition of having a "bad person" near you causes you misfortune is hard to argue against when misfortune exists and is either self-caused or imposed from the outside. Race and racism is a model that makes the past and the future clearer. As with all models, it can be extended outside its domain of… [cont.] Answered by Reoriented - Tue Feb 9 14:10:57 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Race and Racism" |
