Where are some good busking places in Sydney if I am playing solo violin?
Q. Hi! I'm going busking before Christmas and I'll just be playing some simple Christmas songs. Do you think people might get sick of just Christmas songs? Also I already have one of those general busking permits so do you think I will be allowed to busk inside train stations like Town Hall station? Thank you so much :p

A. Hey =) It depends on how long you want to busk for! I live in Tasmania and can get about $130 in three hours, and by that time my shoulders are near dropping off and my fingers black and blue. (note that Sydney is a way better place for buskers and you might get more than this) I find that in three hours I get really bored of all the music I have been playing mainly out of one book- 'Begged, Borrowed, and Stolen' (which is really good- I recommend it) So, Its not really a matter of the people being bored, because most just pass on by, but YOU. A. In the US it is part of your freedom of speech and you are not normally required to get a license, but you must do it somewhere where you will not cause trouble to people passing by. Like for example, you should not play in front of entrances and exits or near hospitals, but to be sure call your local town council and see if you are required to have a permit. A. I made a living busking in london and in europe, with no support from benefits or grants etc. Just from my performing. Now that the Tube has legal busking sites this would be a lot easier, but i now live in yorkshire. edited for clarification: I just want to correct myself here, busking was never illegal but private corporations who wished to stop busking on their premises (i.e london underground and local councils) drew up bylaws stating that they did not allow it. These by laws are now few and far between. I suggest you always check before you go. I do not have a criminal record, even though I did go to court under some of these bylaws. What are the laws around driving a Routemaster across America and busking for money on the way?
Q. Okay. So we're planning on taking an original London Routemaster from Norwich to New York. In the end we want to get 9 musical people involved and busk for charity as we pass through America. Would we need work visas for this? And does anyone know in what states it's illegal to drive such a vehicle? A. Ignore hecklers. Have some change in your bag already. Don't ask for requests. Play to your crowd eg no headbanging stuff if it's mostly grannies. Don't play Land Down Under. Play some classics.

A. It is not generally an offence to busk in the U.k. However, individual local authorities can chose to control busking under provisions of the Local Government Act 1982. Check with your relevant Local Authority. Separate legislation covers busking on railway property and as such is a separate issue. There are restrictions on anyone under the age of 17 busking covered by the Children and Young persons Act 1933. It is an outright offence to beg under the 1824 Vagrancy Act. Or you could get a job.

A. If you keep your wits about you, and don't look like a pushover, you should do just fine. Venice Boardwalk is the perfect place to be seen, but I caution you strongly to have someone there with you who will make sure that your tip basket isn't stolen when your back is turned. Also, I don't know if you need a permit or how they police it. There ARE lots of "weirdos" on the boardwalk, and it can be unpredictable at times. However, it's really a fun place. There's another place that you might want to check out in Santa Monica called the 3rd Street Promenade. This is an outdoor shopping area that's 3 blocks long and used to be a street to drive on. A. It is not illegal in Ireland to busk - but if you draw a big crowd the Garda (Police) might move you on for blocking the highway or causing a disturbance. Your biggest problem might be yobs annoying you or even trying to rob you, Begging is not even against the law in Ireland (The law was changed in 2007 to make it legal) - but even if begging was against the law - buskers would usually be seen as providing a service and therefore not begging. Some busking experience would be useful - but not needed. Outgoing characters would be best - and youe will need to posess your own instrument . This was up on a web site in summer 2008. Good Luck

A. It's not an easy question to answer, because it seems to vary from local authority to local authority. You may need a license, you may not. If you do, the license might cost money or it might be free. Newcastle City Council seem to be fairly happy to allow buskers to perform as long as you're not terrible and provided you get permission in the right way. There's a phone number (0191 211 5968) you should call before you get yourself out there. You don't want to end up spending the night in a cell or getting an outrageous fine. It's better to be safe than sorry. Here's some very general information on any sort of events, including street performing.
